Event Description
More and more people are introducing poetry, and storytelling, into their work – in coaching, leadership development, trainings or meetings.  We’ll read a few poems and discuss how we could use and apply poems in our work. What poems are you using?  How do you tee them up so they’re not dismissed as being too soft?

USING POETRY IN OUR WORK

Poetry, anyone?  Do you use poetry and/or metaphors in your work?

David Whyte alerted us to the power of poetry in the business environment in his book, The Heart Aroused.  He highlighted the fact that many companies are afraid/ reluctant to explore the spaces that poetry can take us to – to their detriment.  In recent years it seems that more people are introducing poetry, and storytelling, into their work – in coaching, leadership development, trainings or meetings.

Poetry gives us access to matters of the heart or the soul, or human development.  Poetic language heightens our awareness of language and the use of metaphor – which we often use in coaching and training – and it also connects to the symbols used in organizations.  We learn to listen for what’s happening beneath the words, which is a deeper kind of listening.

We thought it would be fun to explore this terrain in a BFR program.  Even if you’re not “into” poetry, it could be a new and unexpected way to help people access the non-analytic mind, or a deeper level of listening or awareness.

We’ll read a few poems and discuss how we could use and apply poems in our work.  We’d love to hear from those of you who are using poetry. What poems are you using?  How do you tee them up so they’re not dismissed as being too soft?  Bring us a poem and take us through an activity so we can learn from you.
